What We Do

North Carolina’s midwifery policy landscape presents both urgent challenges and clear opportunities. 

​

Our priorities center first on the decriminalization and licensure of Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs), enabling them to practice openly and expand access to home and community birth, especially in rural and underserved areas. 

​

Second, we advocate for Medicaid and reimbursement reform that fully covers community-based midwifery care across prenatal, birth, and postpartum services, ensuring affordability and sustainability. We also prioritize strengthening pathways into midwifery for Black, Brown, rural, and LGBTQ+ communities through accessible training, mentorship, and reduced regulatory barriers, building a workforce that reflects those most impacted by disparities. 

​

In parallel, we seek greater integration across care settings, supporting collaboration between CNMs, CPMs, and community providers so families experience continuity across home, birth center, and hospital systems. 

​

These efforts are grounded in birth justice: expanding choice, protecting autonomy, and ensuring culturally aligned care.

 

By aligning policy with community-based models already in practice, North Carolina has the opportunity to build a more equitable, accessible, and relationship-centered maternal health system.
